Why Self-Tanners Are THE WORST If You Want To Make Huge Progress in The Gym

and the “30-second” trick to get the same color without self-tanner or the sun

If you're tired of brown sweat and skipped leg days because of fake tan, you need to read this.

Badly applied self tanner streaked by sweat after a workout
Eleven years of practice and one hot session still undoes it.

So Harvard basically confirmed what I found out about self-tanners, and every girl who trains needs to know this.

I'm pale, I lift 5 days a week, and I've been self-tanning since I was 16. Sometimes it looked amazing. Usually it was patchy by my second session.

And at some point I started doing this thing where I'd skip the stairmaster on tan days. Then I'd go lighter on legs. Then I'd cut the sauna.

I stopped training as hard because I didn't want to "sweat my tan off". That totally stalled my progress.

Then I read the study by Nguyen & Kochevar and found out why…

All those mirror moments after the stairmaster were literally never my fault.

Patchy self tanner across a woman's thighs under gym lighting
By the seventh day, my legs look like this consistently…

Sweat changes your skin's pH, and DHA needs a specific pH to develop properly.*

Which means self-tanner is chemically doomed on a body that actually trains. That's the whole thing. That's why my thighs went streaky by Tuesday and why I smelled like burnt biscuits in a hot room.

Anyway. Don't spiral yet. I found a 30-second trick and I'd never heard of it before.

How One Niche Instagram Post Freed Me From The Self-tanning Cycle For Good

11 years of tanning around my life's schedule. I could name every mousse at Target and exactly how long each one needs before it's safe to hit the gym.

Then someone posted this on the girls-who-lift IG page:

Screenshot of the Instagram post about eating your tan
I read it between sets and then sat there for ten minutes.

"Girls, stop buying self-tanners. There's a way to get color that has nothing to do with what you put ON your skin. Nothing on the surface = nothing to sweat off. It's published. You can eat your tan in 30 seconds."

I went looking for proof it was nonsense. Instead I found papers. Boring ones. With tables. They contained real people that were photographed.

It's the pigments we've all been eating our whole lives.

The same ones that turn farmed salmon from grey to pink. And flamingos from white to, well, flamingo.

Two raw salmon steaks side by side, one pale grey and one deep pink
Same fish. The one on the right ate the pigment.

And here's the part that got me: it doesn't sit on top of your skin like a stain. It builds in the living tissue underneath.

So it can't go orange. Can't rub onto your leggings. Can't drip on the ground.

There's nothing on the surface for sweat to streak off. You can train as hard as you want and make faster progress than you ever could on fake tan.

Because it's literally in you, it works on every skin tone. And there are actual studies saying this glow reads more attractive than a normal tan.

These pigments have a name.

Carotenoids.

I'm 25 and I had never heard that word in my life.

Then I got discouraged…

So… How Much Do You Need To Eat These Plant Pigments To See The Tan?

Kind of a lot.

6 tomatoes, 3 carrots, and two pounds of salmon. Every day. For 90 days minimum.

Six tomatoes, three carrots and two pounds of raw salmon on a kitchen counter
That pile is one day. Now picture ninety of them in a row.

And you need all three, not just carrots, unless you want to be orange. Plus carotenoids need fat to actually reach your skin, which is its own issue when you're tracking macros.

Safe? Yes. Convenient? Absolutely not.

So I stayed on the self-tan. Until I found the morning habit that fixed it.

The 30-second Morning Trick That Made Carotenoids Convenient

Zephyrian's natural carotenoid blend.

A single carotenoid softgel in the palm of a hand
One softgel before I leave the house. That is the whole routine.

First, the exact dose, so you go "healthy and glowy" instead of orange.

Second, verified potency. Zephyrian 3rd party tests every batch and publishes it.

Third, it's an oil-based softgel. 30 seconds, right next to your creatine. It's the only format that works. Gummies and drops don't, and science says so.

I took it for 90 days and took progress pics on my iPhone.

Day 0–14

Day 0–14

Nothing. I checked the mirror every morning like an idiot. Turns out your skin needs to saturate or whatever.

Day 21

Day 21

A girl at my gym asked which self-tanner I switched to. I wasn't using one.

Days 64–90

Days 64–90

My skin looks the healthiest in the room and my quads finally look like I train. It survives leg day, the sauna, and two showers a day. And my white sports bra is still white.

You're probably skeptical. I was too.

Before you buy any carotenoids, from anyone, check three things:

I went looking for a cheaper one that ticked all three. There wasn't one.

One bag won't show you anything either. Nothing significant happened to me for two weeks. That's just saturation, and it's why the 150-day money-back guarantee sits on the 90-day protocol instead of a single bag.

It's about $1.43 a day. I was spending more than that on mousse, mitts, and towels I can never use again.

So, two options.

Keep exfoliating, mitting, standing around naked waiting to dry, and moving leg day to Wednesday. For four days of color. Forever.

Or swallow one softgel tomorrow and never think about it again.

This is just carrots with extra steps. $40 a month for a vegetable you can buy for 89 cents.

D

Dani Mrecently

that's exactly what i said. then i actually looked it up. carrots are beta carotene on its own and beta carotene on its own is the thing that turns people orange. the whole point of a blend is the other two pigments cancel that out. the carrot version is the one that makes you look like a cheeto

M

Marcus_Trecently

ok the orange part i genuinely did not know

Maya Ellis

Maya EllisAuthorrecently

This was the part that took me longest to get my head around while writing it. Three pigments, not one, and all three need fat to actually reach your skin. That is why the folk version of this never works, people eat the carrots and skip the fat and wonder why nothing happened.

K

kayla_hrecently

the sweating thing is so real. i stopped doing hot yoga for two years because of tan and never once considered it was the chemistry and not me

S

Steph R.recently

same, and i just accepted it? i was planning a whole training week around a bottle of mousse

P

pale_and_proudrecently

so are your palms orange. that is the only question that actually matters and nobody ever answers it

D

Dani Mrecently

no. i checked mine obsessively for the first month because that was my entire fear. palms and the soles of your feet are where it shows first if you go too hard on beta carotene alone, so if those are clear you're fine

J

jules_88recently

can confirm, palms normal. my hands were the first thing i photographed

PSA. If you smoke or have ever smoked, do NOT take beta carotene supplements. It raises lung cancer risk. Look up the ATBC trial. People need to stop pushing this stuff.

R

R. Oduyarecently

pharmacy tech here. this is a real finding and worth taking seriously, but read what the trials actually did. ATBC and CARET used 20 to 30mg of synthetic lab made beta carotene in heavy smokers, a pack a day for twenty plus years. different form, different dose, different population. that said if you smoke or used to, ask your GP first. worth saying the label on this one says it isn't intended for smokers, which is more than most bother with

H

H. Weaverrecently

Fair. I did not know the trials were specifically on smokers. I still think it should be on the front of the box.

R

R. Oduyarecently

agreed honestly. it's on the label but front of box would be better

Or you could just love yourself the way you were made. Just a thought 🙄

Sunshine is free folks. Wild that people pay money for this.

sunshine is also how i got a mole cut off my shoulder at 29. i'll pay, thanks

also i'm in michigan. the sun is a rumour here from october to april

B

I took astaxanthin on its own for two months and got absolutely nothing out of it. I feel scammed by this entire category at this point.

R

R. Oduyarecently

two problems there and neither is you. astaxanthin alone doesn't do the colour job, it's one of three. and the astaxanthin market is genuinely awful, there was independent testing of 22 products where 13 contained almost nothing against their label and 4 contained literally zero

B

Bexrecently

wait. four had NOTHING in them?

R

R. Oduyarecently

zero. it's the most expensive of the three pigments so it's the most faked. it's why a dated batch test actually matters instead of being marketing fluff

H

hannahliftsrecently

how long realistically. and i mean realistically, not the number on the box

Maya Ellis

Maya EllisAuthorrecently

Honestly: nothing for the first two weeks, and that is the part that makes people quit. Around week three someone else notices before you do. Full thing is closer to two to three months. If anyone tells you two weeks they are selling you something.

P

Priyarecently

week 3 and i've got nothing, starting to think i've wasted my money

D

Dani Mrecently

week 3 is exactly where everybody quits. it's saturation, your skin is still filling up. give it to week 8 before you decide

P

Priyarecently

coming back to say week 6 and my mum asked where i'd been on holiday. i have not been anywhere. sorry for doubting

G

ginger_and_over_itrecently

redhead, freckles, factor 50 person here. nothing has ever worked on me. is there any point

M

Marta K.recently

very fair here too. it isn't a tan, it's pigment sitting in your skin, so it doesn't need a base to build on the way sun does. on me it reads as looking healthy rather than looking tanned, which honestly is what i wanted anyway

G

ginger_and_over_itrecently

does it darken your freckles though. that's the melanotan thing that put me off

R

R. Oduyarecently

no. freckles and moles are melanin. this isn't melanin at all, it's a food pigment, so it has nothing to act on there. that's the actual difference between this and the injectable stuff

J

jules_88recently

nobody in this entire industry ever prints the actual doses. it's always "clinically studied blend"

D

Dani Mrecently

this one does, it's on the pouch. 30mg lycopene, 16mg astaxanthin, 16mg beta carotene, and the beta carotene is algae sourced rather than synthetic. took me thirty seconds to find which is thirty seconds more than most brands survive

T

Tomasrecently

it's fat soluble so unless you're taking it with a proper meal you are just making expensive urine

E

elle.trainsrecently

the fat is in the capsule, it's a coconut oil softgel. that's the entire reason it isn't a gummy or a powder. gummies are basically sugar and a fat soluble pigment in a fat free gummy never gets anywhere

N

Nadia_Lrecently

does it protect you from the sun at all, or

R

R. Oduyarecently

no, and be suspicious of anyone who says otherwise. it's colour, not SPF. wear sunscreen exactly like you did before

Q

quietlyskepticalrecently

do you have to take it forever or does it just fall off a cliff the second you stop

M

Marta K.recently

it fades back over a few weeks the way a real tan does. it isn't permanent. nothing is, including the sun

R

RunnerMum42recently

took longer for me than the article says. i was closer to five weeks before anyone said anything, and i'm quite fair. still going, but i'd rather people knew that going in than felt lied to at week four

Maya Ellis

Maya EllisAuthorrecently

This is a fair correction and I'd rather it sat here than got buried. Five weeks is well within normal. The 150 day window exists precisely because the honest answer is a range, not a date.

K

K. Almeidarecently

pregnant, is this a no

R

R. Oduyarecently

ask your midwife rather than a comment section, but the standard advice on any concentrated carotenoid in pregnancy or breastfeeding is don't, without a green light from the person actually looking after you

S

samrecently

the grey salmon vs pink salmon picture is what finally made this click for me. i've eaten farmed salmon my whole life and never once thought about why it's pink

T

Trecently

wait is this why my legs always go patchy after leg day and my arms are completely fine 💀
